Permanent Ricochet

I experienced my fifth concussion in 2017. At the time, I was frustrated with the injury and the negative impact it had on my life. I was advised by doctors to no longer participate in contact sports due to that being my fifth concussion, the risk of second impact syndrome and long term brain damage. When I was finally allowed to return to normal activity, things were still off. I had trouble focusing, social interaction and communication was more difficult and my short term memory wasn’t as sharp as before. These long term effects caused anger and frustration in me for a long time and I was constantly searching for answers and different routes for recovery. Little did I know, my experiences with concussions would be the catalyst for my passion for psychology and the motivation to create art that heals.

Permanent Ricochet is a collection of work that addresses the relationship between my experience with brain trauma, mycelium and healing. Through this body of work, I investigate the intersections between human and mycelial ways of being and how they have impacted my approach to recovery. These pieces are abstracted physical manifestations of communication and healing. I use sound, sculpture, photo and poetry to create perplexing pieces. The elements in this body of work mirror my ongoing healing and approach to recovery.
