Full Project Concept :

S.A.D is a body of work that explores the mood disorder that is characterized by
depression. Seasonal affective disorder (known as S.A.D or seasonal depression) occurs with a
seasonal pattern or at the same time every year. Treatment for this disorder can include light
therapy, talk therapy, and medication. Seasonal affective disorder is a mental illness I've dealt
with for several years but only recently sought active treatment for. I wanted to use this body of
work to document the heaviness of seasonal depression and visually depict specific emotions I
experience. Through this series, I hope to initiate a conversation about S.A.D and mental illness
in the hopes of breaking down the stigma towards talking about mental health.

My concept explores light by exposing the reality of my skin while on Isotretinoin (Accutane) medication and uses natural light and shadows to reveal several different aspects of how this medicine has been affecting me. I decided to select images that remain ambiguous to an extent. My acne has been a recent burden on my confidence and I find it hard to take pictures and feel comfortable showing my real skin. I wanted to use this project as an opportunity to enter into uncomfortable territory within myself. The purpose of this photo sequence is not only to feel more comfortable in sharing my skin and acne but to also evoke empathy in viewers who can or cannot relate to having acne.
